Challenge:
Operating a business in a rough neighborhood presents challenges especially when you need your life blood, customers, to visit you at that location. Selling on the internet works to a degree but when the product is a night's stay at a hotel, eventually the customer must come to your location. We lost a great amount of business that we know about and undoubtedly much more that we were unaware of. Customers that had reservations cancelled after talking to local contacts and being told they were endangering their life staying on South Nevada Ave.
Solution:
We attacked the problem on multiple fronts. We were meticulous with our curb appeal, we were unforgiving on product quality. We offered below market pricing. We bolstered our amenity packages. We formed an association of merchants with similar concerns. We got the city involved and were relentless on improving neighborhood safety issues. We contracted with the police for beat patrols to reduce crime and improve perception. We (as an association) complained incessantly about a problem address that was averaging over 500 911 calls per year to a 20 room small hotel. We organized a community cleanup and got civic and charitable organizations involved in a day of working together for the better of the community. We established a blog site for merchants to communicate with one another about potential and emerging problems to get a handle on them before they got out of hand. We pulled in resources from City Council, Charitable organizations, adjoining neighborhoods, local school districts, downtrodden assistance programs, local press, police department and detectives as well as got to know each other better.
